Well, so much for the thought that we would have a snowless winter this year. We have about 6" out there as I write, and it is still falling, despite the forecasters predicting this morning it would be over by now! While it IS a good thing for the storms to hit on the weekend because it makes it easier to clear the streets and parking lots and no school days need to be made up, as a pastor I shudder whenever the forecast for weekend storms hit the airwaves. Weekend storms translate into fewer people in church which translates into small collections which translates into greater difficulty to pay bills. So I am hoping and praying that everything gets cleaned up tonight and the church is bursting at the seams tomorrow.
In preparation for this storm I went out to the courtyard yesterday and picked the last of my broccoli! That's right - fresh broccoli from the garden on January 20th! It will continue to grow until the ground freezes solid - which it is in the process of doing. That is even stranger because I got NO broccoli from those plants all summer. The leaves all disappeared one day, and I was puzzled as to why since the only access to the courtyard is through the door leading into the rectory (or by flying in over the garage roof!). Jean (our office manager) went out one day and showed me these caterpillars that looked just like the stalks - one on each plant - well fed and content! I sprayed the plants, they grew more leaves, and more caterpillars returned. This process was repeated until it was too cold for caterpillars. THEN the broccoli came! Hooray!

New Year
It's hard to believe, but half of the 1st month of this New Year has already passed. 'Tempus fugit' as they used to say! Christmas is a distant memory except for the few poinsettias that decorate our church and chapel - I tell people I am saving them for Valentine's Day! On Monday the Liturgy Committee met to beginning planning for Lent, which begins on February 22nd with Ash Wednesday - a little over a month from now.
We had a little bit of snow on Wednesday morning, and are expecting a bit more tomorrow morning, and maybe a wopping 3-6" on Saturday! After the few feet we have back in October, it's amazing we look forward to half a foot or less now!
Our school hosts an Open House this evening in hopes of attracting new students for next year. For some reason our Pre-K and Kindegarten programs are just about full already. We are ahead of where we were this time last year, but that is a good thing. With a Development Director added to staff this year, our activities have received much more news exposure.
Looks like that is paying off.
And I met on Sunday afternoon with the couples looking to be married at St. Thomas this year. Alot of times I use the marriage preparation time as a time to get couples to return to practicing their faith. For some reason they have been away from weekly Mass, and when we look at why, and what they are missing, and what drew them back for their wedding, many begin to make that connection once again. However, interestingly, most of the couples I met with on Sunday already come to church each week, and find spiritual meaning in being united before the altar. So that is a wonderful thing, and I look forward to working with them over the next few months.
And as I get ready for my annual Super Bowl party, here's hoping it is the Patriots and Giants!
